Calm and Clear

The Foundations of Mindfulness Meditation

Weekly Class
Two Registration Options:  Live Classroom or Audio via the Internet

January 25th - March 15th

8 Tuesday evenings     7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

lotusLiving in stressful times, the ability to relax, to be clear and fully present, is essential for meeting life with sanity, balance, love and humor.  For thousands of years people have cultivated this ability, and you can too, through the practice of mindfulness meditation.  Experience drug-free the benefits of a calmer mind and body, increased awareness, energy, and the quiet joy of reconnecting with the simplicity of being.  It is a welcome return to our innermost self.

This course is designed to give you all the tools you need to develop or revitalize a regular meditation practice in support of a conscious life.  We’ll begin with the whys of practice and proceed with a thorough and practical exploration of the hows.  Topics will include:

How to establish a daily meditation

   Relaxation

   Cultivating attention

   Non-judgmental awareness

   Inhabiting the body

   Developing awareness of breathing

   Dealing with thoughts

Effort and the attitude of non-striving

   Developing empathy for yourself

Common challenges and how to remedy them

   The fruits of practice

This class is open to everyone.  No previous meditation experience is required.

Classes will include guided meditation, talks, exercises and discussion.  The class format offers opportunity for personal guidance from a qualified teacher as well as for sharing experiences with others in the class

Each class will be recorded and made available on a weekly basis to all registered students for listening and downloading via the internet.  Participants are encouraged to re-listen to talks each week and to use the recordings to guide their meditation.  Having the recordings also means that if you miss a class, you can listen to the recording and catch up before the next class.

Instructor:  Nancy McBride

Registration Options:  For anyone beginning a meditation practice, we recommend that this class be taken in person.  There is so much value experienced from practicing meditation with a group and having the opportunity for personal attention from an instructor.  For those who are brushing up an existing practice, or for those who are unable to attend in person, this class is offered via the internet.  You will be provided with weekly recordings of the on-site class, can practice the guided meditations at home, and listen when convenient for you.

Mindful Parenting:

How to Raise Emotionally Healthy Children

Weekly Class

January 24th - March 7th

(no class on President's Day, February 21)

6 Monday mornings     10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Mindful Parenting brings more calm and joy into family life. It enables us to live in the present moment where we are most readily available to parent in healthy and growth promoting ways. In this class we’ll learn practical mindfulness tools that will help us to approach the inevitable daily challenges of family life with more ease and balance.

Benefits for Parents

Calm and clarity in stressful moments

Understanding unique reactive patterns-how and when we “lose” it

Effective and healthy parenting by responding rather than reacting

Attuned to our children and ourselves--the power of being present

Benefits for Children

Self regulation—calming, better impulse control, self soothing

     Feel acknowledged and understood—feel loved

     Self acceptance, enhanced self esteem

This course is for parents of children from infancy through adolescence who want to apply the insight and wisdom of mindfulness to the vital task of parenting.   (One class will focus on strategies for dealing with the challenge of surviving the teen years.)  It does not require any previous experience with mindfulness meditation.

Satsang - In the company of Truth or coming together in Truth

Florian SchlosserOnce a month we host a Satsang gathering with Adyashanti on DVD.  The session begins with 15 minutes of silent sitting followed by the DVD.  The recordings run approximately 1 1/2 hours including a talk from Adyashanti and one-on-one dialogues with those who wish to inquire directly into their true nature.  Thanks to one of our generous members we are blessed with having the entire DVD collection of Satsangs with Adyashanti.

Adyashanti dares all seekers of peace and freedom to take the possibility of liberation in this life seriously.  He began teaching in 1996, at the request of his Zen teacher with whom he had been studying for 14 years.  Since then many spiritual seekers have awakened to their true nature while spending time with Adyashanti.

The author of The End of Your World, Emptiness Dancing, and True Meditation, Adyashanti offers spontaneous and direct non-dual teachings that have been compared to those of the early Zen masters and Advaita Vedanta sages.  However, Adya says, “If you filter my words through any tradition or ‘-ism’, you will miss altogether what I am saying.  The liberating truth is not static; it is alive.  It cannot be put into concepts and be understood by the mind.  The truth lies beyond all forms of conceptual fundamentalism.  What you are is the beyond—awake and present, here and now already.  I am simply helping you to realize that.”

A native of Northern California, Adyashanti lives with his wife, Mukti, and teaches extensively in the San Francisco Bay Area offering satsangs, weekend intensives, and silent retreats.  He also travels to teach in other areas of the United States and Canada.  “Adyashanti” means primordial peace.
